Bahman Jalali

Bahman Jalali

Bahman Jalali was born in 1953 in a cultural family in Tehran. His family's deep roots in literature and art caused him to become familiar with and grow up with classical and modern Iranian art and literature from his childhood. Alongside these literary and artistic interests, he completed his university education in the early years of the 1960s in the Faculty of Economics and Political Science of Tehran. During this period, the field of photography was not established as an independent field in the university, but Jalali started photography and continued his specialized training by going to London and under the supervision of John Vickers. In those years before the revolution, Jalali also pursued photography professionally and diligently, and photographed for a number of magazines of that time, in addition, he also participated in solo and group exhibitions in some galleries in Tehran in the 70s. But his professional presence in the field of photography dates back to the time of the Iranian revolution, when, by attending the scenes of the revolution, he recorded unique photos, which includes his revolution collection, and some of his photos from this period have been displayed in a number of exhibitions.

He photographed most of the scenes of the revolution, from everything that was the center of the revolution to everything that is sometimes considered marginal, and the recording of these references over time, while maintaining the documentary feature and also going through the process of becoming artistic, are considered as artistic-documentary photos. In the years after the revolution and during the Iran-Iraq war, Jalali went to the fronts and photographed this eight-year and difficult period, which, like the photos of the revolution, have very important documentary and artistic aspects. In the years after the war, in addition to his constant and continuous activity in photography, Jalali nurtured two generations of photographers at the university, who are now themselves prominent professors of photography in the country's universities. The collection of Bahman Jalali's flowers, Qajar and Bushehr photos are other famous collections of this prominent photographer that have been present and displayed in international and Iranian auctions.
